Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni said the film world had lost a true genius and with his death an era has come to an end. She hailed his commitment to social issues and said that he was truly a multi-faceted performer as an actor, director and producer, and his death has caused an irreparable loss.

The Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and the Information and Broadcasting Minister Mrs. Ambika Soni have condoled the death of Devanand.

In his message, Dr. Manmohan Singh said that he was a great Artisit, who entertained generations of cinema lovers for over five decades. He said, Dev Anand was an embodiment of passion for acting and film making.

Dev Anand made his debut as an actor in 1946 in “Hum Ek Hain”. He was offered his first big break by Ashok Kumar, who picked him up as the lead actor for Bombay Talkies production “Ziddi” co-starring Kamini Kaushal in 1948 which became a big success.

Born on September 26, 1923 and named Dharam Dev Anand in Shakargarh Tehsil of Gurdaspur district in undivided Punjab now in Narowal in Pakistan to well-to-do advocate Kishorimal Anand, he graduated in English literature from Government College, Lahore.

He began his career in the military censor office at Churchgate, Bombay and later joined his elder brother Chetan Anand as a member of the Indian People’s Theatre Association.

Bollywood’s evergreen star Dev Anand, whose flamboyant image and innate romantic spirit swayed millions of fans, died in London last night following cardiac arrest. He was 88. Family sources said that Dev Anand had gone to London for medical check up as he was not keeping well for the last few days. His son Sunil was with him when he breathed his last.

Known for his trademark puff of hair, his sloping walk and smile, Dev Anand acted in countless hits like “Guide”, “Paying Guest”, “Baazi”, “Jewel Thief “, “CID”, “Johny Mera
Naam”, “Amir Garib”, “Warrant”, “Hare Rama Hare Krishna” and “Des Pardes”.

For his outstanding contribution to Indian cinema, Dev Anand was honoured with the prestigious the ‘Padma Bhushan’ in 2001 and ‘Dada Saheb Phalke Award’ in 2002. He won two Filmfare Awards – India’s equivalent of the Oscars – in 1958 for his performance in the film “Kala Paani” and in 1966 for “Guide”.

In Turkey, more than 200 people have been killed in yesterday’s earthquake measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale that struck the eastern parts of the country.

Turkish Interior Minister Idris Naim Sahin said in Istanbul today that the death toll in the earthquake has gone up to 217 and over a thousand people have been injured.

Efforts are on to rescue those trapped in the debris in Ercis and Van, the two worst quake hit cities.

One hundred people were killed in Van, while 117 perished in Ercis. Schools have been closed for a week in Van.

Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, after visiting the affected areas, said the death toll could increase as many apartment buildings collapsed in Ercis, close to the Iranian border.

Survivors and rescuers complained of lack of heavy machinery to remove chunks of cement floors that had pancaked on to each other. Serious damage and casualties were also reported in the district of Celebibag, near Ercis.

US Geological Survey initially measured the quake at 7.3 magnitude but later downgraded it to 7.2. The earthquake struck at a depth of 20 kilometers with its epicenter 16 kilometers north-east of Van in eastern Turkey.

It was followed by a series of powerful aftershocks, also centered north of Van, including two of magnitude 5.6 soon after the quake and one of 6.0 late yesterday.

Turkey is vulnerable to earthquakes as it sits on major geological fault lines. Two earthquakes in 1999 with a magnitude of over 7 on the Richter scale had killed around 20,000 people in the densely populated parts of the north-west Turkey.

Australian astronomers said they have spotted an exotic planet that is
believed to be made of diamond in our galactic backyard. The sparkling world
4,000 light years away is 60,000 kilometers in diameter, five times that of the Earth, and is thought to be all that remains of a once-massive star
which collapsed and was crunched down into crystalline.

An international team lead by Matthew Bailes, from Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, said they have discovered a low-mass but dense object in orbit around a rapidly-rotating neutron star. He said the new planet is far denser than any other known so far and consists largely of carbon. The findings were reported in the journal Science.

In the United States, Hurricane Irene’s strong winds and heavy rains hit the eastern coast early on Saturday. Though it has lost some strength but still capable of affecting tens of millions of people with floods and power supply disruption.

Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center downgraded Irene to the weakest category for hurricanes with winds at 150 kilometers per hour in the early morning hours but cautioned that the storm would remain a hurricane as it moves into the heavily populated corridor around Washington. A hurricane warning has been issued for New York and much of the eastern U.S. coast.

New York, Mayor Michael Bloomberg has ordered the city’s first ever mandatory evacuation. Some quarter-million people have been told to leave their homes in low-lying areas of the city, including the Wall Street financial district. In another first, New York’s entire public transit system, including subway trains and buses, will shut down today. All three of New York’s major airports will also shut down starting at mid-day.

Airlines have already canceled hundreds of flights elsewhere on the east coast, and train services in parts of the eastern region have been suspended.

Irene is the first hurricane to seriously threaten the United States in three years. It has already killed at least one person in Puerto Rico and two in the Dominican Republic, and also destroyed homes in The Bahamas.

President Barack Obama has described it as an extremely dangerous and costly storm. He said the nation has to be prepared for the worst. He returned to Washington late Friday, leaving his vacation in Massachusetts a day earlier than planned.

The threat of the hurricane also led organizers in Washington to postpone Saturday’s dedication of a memorial to civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr.

In Libya, heavy fighting is reported in Tripoli around the compound of embattled leader Col Muammar Gaddafi after rebels seized control of much of the city on Monday. A rebel spokesman said, pro-Gaddafi forces still control about one fifth of Tripoli. He said, tanks emerged from Col Gaddafi’s Bab al-Azizia compound early Monday morning and began firing. Sustained gunfire has been heard in the area.

The rebels also said they had captured Col Gaddafi’s son Saif al-Islam, but there is no word of his whereabouts. Another son, Mohammad Gaddafi is under house arrest. He was captured in dramatic circumstances while giving an interview to Al-jazeera.

The whereabouts of Libyan strongman Muammar Gaddafi, who has ruled the oil rich nation uninterrupted for 42 years remains a mystery as rebel forces swept into the capital Tripoli to jubilant crowds. A diplomatic source told the AFP news agency that Col Gaddafi could still be in his compound Bab al-Azizia and Command centre.

The Rebel National Transitional Council Chairman Mustafa Mohammed Abdul Jalil said the rebels will halt their offensive if Col Gaddafi announced his departure. He added that rebel forces will give Col Gaddafi and his sons safe passage out of the country.

The International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants for Col Gaddafi, his son Saif al-Islam, and the head of the intelligence service, Abdullah al-Sanussi, for crimes against humanity. The Court’s prosecutor Luis Moreno Ocampo said he had been informed of Saif al-Islam’s arrest.

Throughout the night, jubilant crowds remained in central Green Square, previously the scene of nightly pro-Gaddafi demonstrations. Rebel supporters tore down the green flags of the Libyan government and trampled on portraits of Colonel Gaddafi.

Rebels met little resistance as they swept in from east, south and west. In an audio message broadcast late on Sunday, the Libyan leader urged residents to “save Tripoli” from the rebels.

Libyan Information Minister Moussa Ibrahim said that the Gaddafi government still had 65,000 loyal soldiers under its command. However, some forces have surrendered to the rebels, including the special battalion charged with securing Tripoli. Ibrahim said fighting in the city since noon on Sunday had left 1,300 people dead and 5,000 wounded. There is no confirmation of the figures.

Western leaders have welcomed the rebel advance and urged Col Gaddafi to go. US President Barack Obama in a statement that tonight, the momentum against the Gaddafi regime has reached a tipping point and Tripoli is slipping from his grasp.

British Prime Minister David Cameron, who is cutting short his holiday to chair a meeting of the National Security Council, said it is clear that the end is near for Gaddafi. He said the Libyan leader had committed appalling crimes against the people of Libya and he must go now to avoid any further suffering for his own people.

The rebels move began on 17th February after uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt and they entered Tripoli with little sign of the expected stiff resistance after 5 and half months of fighting.

Besides reducing the chances that a button w get snagged on the metal drum and pop off, you’ll also cut down on the beating the outside of the fabric takes. “It keeps the clothes from getting wear marks where they bang around in the washer and dryer,” says Linda Cobb, aka the Queen of Clean, author of How the Queen Cleans Everything. “They’ll look newer longer.”

If you have Outlook, go to Tools, Options, Mail Format, and Fonts, and then choose Garamond as your font for all new messages and replies. It conveys authority, says Sigman.
