Short bursts of exercise can reduce your risk of diabetes, say Scottish researchers. In their study, men sprinted on a stationary bike for 30 seconds, rested for 4 minutes, and then repeated the routine three to five more times. After six workouts, the men’s insulin sensitivity improved by 23 percent. “High-intensity sprints prime your muscle fibers to respond better to insulin,” says study author James Timmons, Ph.D. If you’re not tiring toward the end of each sprint, you’re bicycling with too Little resistance

If you have diabetes, the thought of getting your daily doses of insulin through some means other than needle and syringe probably sounds appealing. It may soon become reality. An inhaled insulin system, Exubera, is being reviewed by the US Food and Drug Administration. Other inhaled insulin preparations are also under development.

Use of inhaled insulin doesn’t eliminate the need for injections of long-acting insulin, but it does reduce the total number of daily injections required. Evidence suggests that Exubera is well tolerated, although a mild to moderate cough may be a side effect. Researchers have yet to accumulate data on the drug’s long-term effects and effectiveness.

Exubera is a short-acting insulin in powder form administered with a special inhaler before meals. The insulin is delivered to your lungs and quickly absorbed into your bloodstream. Studies have shown this inhaled form of insulin is more rapidly absorbed than injected short-acting insulin preparations and is just as effective.

Researchers randomized 251 diabetic adults, ages 39-70, to aerobic exercise on treadmills or stationary bicycles, resistance training on weight machines, both exercise regimens, or a sedentary control group. While all three exercise groups saw reductions in hemoglobin Aic (a measure of blood-sugar control) compared with the control group, those in the combined exercise group experienced even better results, the study authors reported.

Diabetes can damage the blood vessels, including the arteries that supply blood to the brain. This damage makes it easier for fatty deposits (plaques) to form in the arteries. The build-up of arterial plaques (atherosclerosis) can choke off blood supply to raise the blood pressure, leading to coronary heart disease.

Timings of Blood sugar tests:

Time of testing – Normal readings/per 100 ml of blood:

1. before breakfast – 80-120 mg.

2. 2 hours after breakfast – 140—180mg
3. Before lunch————–80—120mg;

4. Bed time——————100—140mg;

5. At 3am——————–70—140mg.

Diabetes Diet Plan:

1. High Glycemic foods raise the blood sugar levels. Then extra insulin is produced, quickly sending sugars into blood cells, this is extra burden to the pancreas.

2. Effective management of diabetes depends on a delicate balance between medication and diet control and also to keep the weight under control (neither over weight nor under weight).

3. To maintain blood sugar levels close to the normal levels.

4. Doing exercise regularly and avoiding stress and strain.

5. Avoid sweets and fried foods, which raise cholesterol levels in the blood (leading to heart disease).

6. Every adult requires 2000 calories per day to maintain optimum health.

7. The diet of the person with diabetes should consists of a good combination of nutrients i.e.;-carbohydrates, proteins, fat, vitamins and minerals, in order to stay fit and fine and to keep the blood sugar levels in check.

“I count on Pakistan authorities to show that they are resolute in combating terrorism,” Sarkozy said at a commemorative function at Trident-Oberoi Hotel, one of the sites of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks.

Comparing the Mumbai terror strikes to 9/11 attacks in the US, he said, “We shall stand by India so that justice is delivered”.

Calling for international cooperation to check terror, Sarkozy said terrorism should be outlawed universally. “We should have true international cooperation to combat terrorism,” he said.

Sarkozy also honoured Karambir Kang of Taj Hotel and Devendra Bharma of Trident-Oberoi for their efforts in saving lives during 26/11 attacks with `Insignia of Officer of Ordre National Du Merite’ for distinguished service.

Earlier, on arrival in Mumbai on Tuesday morning, the French President paid tributes to the 26/11 martyrs at the Police Memorial on Marine Drive.

Accompanied by wife Carla Bruni and French officials, the President laid a wreath in the memory of the martyred security personnel and observed a minute’s silence.

166 people were killed by ten terrorists who stormed South Mumbai late on 26th November 2008, targeting a pub, two luxury hotels, country’s oldest and biggest railway terminus (CST), a Jewish centre and a hospital, among others.

DGP Sivanandan, Mumbai Police Commissioner Sanjeev Dayal were among the top police officials present on the occasion.

Maharashtra Governor K Sankaranarayanan thanked Sarkozy for his “kind gesture” of paying tribute to the victims of the deadly terrorist attack on Mumbai.

“Terrorism has become a global menace. Terrorism continues to inflict pain and suffering on peoples lives all over the world,” he said, speaking before Sarkozy.

“We value our cooperation with France in counter terrorism, especially in the context of our strategic partnership,” he said.

“We need to deepen our contacts through exchange of information, expertise and best practises in the area of counter terrorism,” he added.

Countering terrorist finance continues to remain a major challenge in our efforts in combating terrorism, he said.

“We appreciate Frances support for Indias membership of Paris based Financial Action Task Force. As a full member of FATF, India looks forward to contributing to formulation and redefining of international standards in the fight against money laundering and terror financing,” he said.

India values its strategic partnership with France, which is marked by close political understanding and mutual trust, he said.

“I am convinced that your visit will provide further impetus to our bilateral relations and enhance the strategic partnership between our two countries,” he told Sarkozy.

Meanwhile, France on Monday joined India in pressing Pakistan to actively prosecute the “authors” and their accomplices of Mumbai terror attacks expeditiously, addressing a joint media interaction with Singh, Sarkozy said Pakistan should fight terrorism “determinedly”.
Terrorism emanating from Afghanistan and Pakistan was among the issues that were discussed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and French President Nicolas Sarkozy with both expressing concern over the continuing existence of safe havens and sanctuaries for terror groups in these countries.

“With the tragic losses suffered in the November 2008 terrorist attacks in Mumbai particularly in mind, we call for the active prosecution of the authors of such crimes and their accomplices, and urge that they be brought to justice expeditiously,” a joint statement, issued after the meeting, said in an apparent reference to Pakistan.

Addressing a joint media interaction with Singh, Sarkozy said Pakistan should fight terrorism “determinedly”.

Terrorism strikes not only the people and the interests of our two countries but also imperils peace and stability of our respective regions and the world.

We reaffirm our irrevocable condemnation of this scourge in all its forms and our will to intensify our cooperation to counter it, the statement said.

“Since our Joint Statement of 25 January 2008, we have aimed at intensifying bilateral consultations and exchanges with the objective of better assessing these threats and sharing relevant information”.

“Today, we have decided to make this cooperation a priority of the Indo-French security relationship,” it said.

The two leaders affirmed to continue to enhanced bilateral operational cooperation as far as possible and ensure that the widest possible measure of mutual legal assistance is rendered, and that extradition requests are processed expeditiously.

The two governments will coordinate their endeavours in international bodies such as the Financial Action Task Force in order to define common positions and promote concrete initiative, the statement said.

“In the pursuance of our efforts to strengthen the international legal framework against terrorism, we resolve to intensify our efforts to urgently conclude the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism at the United Nations,” it said.

“France and India call on all countries to become part, as a matter of urgency, of all international counter- terrorism conventions,” it added.

Both sides also reiterated the importance of adhering to sanctions regime against Al Qaeda and Taliban as established by UNSCR 1267 and subsequent resolutions and the need to preserve its credibility

Women who don’t breastfeed their babies are more at risk of developing type-2 diabetes, the most common form of the disease, later in life than mothers who did.

“We have seen dramatic increases in the prevalence of type-2 diabetes over the last century,” said Eleanor Bimla Schwarz, assistant professor of medicine, epidemiology, and obstetrics, gynaecology at the University of Pittsburgh.

“Diet and exercise are widely known to impact the risk of type-2 diabetes, but few people realise that breastfeeding also reduces the mothers’ risk of developing the disease later in life by decreasing maternal belly fat,” said Schwarz, according to a Pittsburgh release.

The study included 2,233 women between the ages of 40 and 78. Overall, 56 per cent of mothers reported they had breastfed an infant for at least one month, reports the American Journal of Medicine.

Twenty-seven percent of mothers who did not breastfeed developed type-2 diabetes or were almost twice as likely to develop the disease than women who had breastfed or never given birth.

Conversely, mothers who breastfed all of their children were not more likely to develop diabetes than women who never gave birth.

These long-term differences were notable even after considering age, race, physical activity, tobacco and alcohol use.

“Our study provides another good reason to encourage women to breastfeed their infants, at least for the infant’s first month of life,” Schwarz said.

“Clinicians need to consider women’s pregnancy and lactation history when advising women about their risk for developing type 2 diabetes,” she added.

Coming soon: A “sweet” way to detect diabetes before its symptoms or complications occur, and reverse its course, say scientists. A team at John Hopkins University has claimed that the simple, routine test for detecting the subtle onset of the condition could soon be developed, after scientists discovered a dramatic increase of an easy-to-detect enzyme in red blood cells of diabetics, the ‘Diabetes’ journal reported.

Their study has showed that the enzyme O-GlcNAcase is up to two to three times higher in people with diabetes and prediabetes than in those with no disease. “That’s a big difference, especially in an enzyme that’s as tightly regulated as this one is,” said team leader Prof. Gerald Hart at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Building on their previous research, which showed how an abundant but difficult-to-detect sugar switch known as O-GlcNAc (pronounced oh-GLICK-nack) responded to nutrients and stress, the scientists knew this small molecule was elevated in the red cells of patients with diabetes. “The question was whether the elevation happened in the earliest stages of diabetes and therefore might have value as a diagnostic tool,” Prof Hart said. To find out, the team focused on levels of O-GlcNAcase, an enzyme that removes O-GlcNAc in red cells. It modifies many of the cell’s proteins to control their functions in response to nutrients and stress.

Women suffering from diabetes are at a greater risk of developing cancer, a new study has revealed.
The researchers at Tel Aviv University’s Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine at the Sackler Faculty of Medicine observed 16,721 diabetics, differentiating between men and women and defining the relative cancer risks for each group.
“The interaction of diabetes and female hormones appears to exaggerate the risk, and make certain organs like the uterus and ovaries more receptive to certain kinds of cancer,” said Dr Gabriel Chodick, who along with Dr. Varda Shalev led the research.
However, “for men, this study is good news”, said Chodick. The findings show that diabetes appears to have a preventative effect on conditions like prostate cancer, reducing the risk of cancers associated with insulin-like hormones by a whopping 47 per cent. Dr Chodick suggests diabetic women to undergo screening for colon cancer earlier.

The humble grapes could help improve heart function and reduce diabetes, American scientists have claimed.

Researchers at the University of Michigan found that eating the fruit could slow a ‘downhill sequence’ of high blood pressure and insulin resistance that might lead to a development of those conditions.

The scientists, after an animal test, discovered that a grape-enriched diet can prevent risk factors for metabolic syndrome — a condition which is often a precursor to type 2 diabetes, The Telegraph reported.

For their study, the researchers fed laboratory rats a blend of green, red and black grapes as part of a high-fat American style diet and compared them with another test group fed with a similar diet full of fat and sugars.

After three months, they found that the rats that received the grape-enriched diet had lower blood pressure, better heart function, and reduced indicators of inflammation in the heart and the blood than rats who received no grape powder.

Rats also had lower triglycerides and improved glucose tolerance.

Aerobic exercise 30 minutes for living fit

Heart surgeon Dr Steven Bolling, head of the university’s Cardioprotection Research Laboratory, said: “The possible reasoning behind the lessening of metabolic syndrome is that the phytochemicals were active in protecting the heart cells from the damaging effects of metabolic syndrome.

“In the rats, inflammation of the heart and heart function was maintained far better.

“Although there’s not a particular direct correlation between this study and what humans should do, it’s very interesting to postulate that a diet higher in phytochemical-rich fruits, such as grapes, may benefit humans.”

Although, he added, those wanting to lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of diabetes should follow some tried-and-true advice such as eating a healthy diet low in saturated fat, trans fat and cholesterol, maintain a desirable weight and exercise more.

The findings are published at the Experimental Biology convention in California.
