Delhi Police imposes prohibitory orders around the venue of Anna Hazare’s proposed fast

Delhi Police has imposed prohibitory orders in some central Delhi localities, including Jai Prakash Narain Park, the venue of Anna Hazare’s proposed fast in protest against the Lokpal Bill. Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat said Section 144 of CrPC has been imposed in some areas of Daryaganj and IP police stations, which include Jai Prakash Narain Park and Shaheed Park. The orders came following police denying permission to Hazare to hold the protest at the park after organisers refused to give an undertaking restricting the number of protest days to three and protestors to 5,000. A large contingent of police, including women personnel, has been deployed around Jai Prakash Narain Park to ensure that no untoward incident take place.

Meanwhile, the government has justified the denial of permission by Delhi Police to Anna Hazare for holding indefinite fast at Jai Prakash Narain Park in New Delhi. Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni told reporters in New Delhi on Monday that law of the land is equal for all and even political parties have to take permission for holding agitation.

After the Hazare team refused to give an undertaking restricting the number of days of protests to three and protestors to 5,000, the police refused to grant permission to them for the indefinite fast demanding a strong Lokpal Bill.
