Drinking two or more sugar-sweetened carbonated beverages or soft drinks a week doubles pancreatic cancer risk, reports journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention. A 14-year study assessed the link between soft drink and juice consumption and the risk of pancreatic cancer in 60,524 adults. Those who consumed two or more soft drinks a week had an 87 per cent higher risk of developing the cancer than those who did not. Juice consumption did not add to the risk. Sweetened beverages may increase insulin level in the body and contribute to pancreatic cancer cell growth. Soda drinkers may engage in adverse health behaviours such as smoking and red meat intake, which we can contribute to the heightened risk.
