About 40 per cent of cancers can be prevented by getting vaccinated against cancer-causing infections and adopting lifestyle changes like quitting smoking, limiting alcohol intake, maintaining healthy weight and avoiding too much sun. Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide—cancer deaths are expected to rise by 45 per cent from 7.9 million in 2007 to 11.5 million in 2030. The Geneva- based International Union Against Cancer said about 21 per cent of all cancers were due to infections like the human papilloma virus, which causes cervical cancer, and hepatitis infections that cause stomach and liver cancer, and can be prevented with vaccines. Other cancer-causing infections include hepatitis C, HIV and Epstein Barr, a herpes-type virus transmitted by saliva.
