Issue 3 concerning support of casinos in Ohio is approved. The conditions include one casino in Cincinnati, Cleveland, Toledo and Columbus, but distribute a tax to all counties. The casino operators are required to pay a $50 million fee for state job training.
Two of three statewide issues passed easily Tuesday, with the third to allow casinos in Cleveland, Toledo, Columbus and Cincinnati well ahead in the polls.
Jumping out to a clear lead, State Issue 3 benefited early from large blocks of votes from the urban counties, particularly Cleveland and Cincinnati.

Hey, how are you
I think the passing of issue 3 was a very bad idea. Our family has already been, just about, torn apart by the nickel slots here in Ashland and Mansfield. It’s just a bad idea. Can’t wait to say, “I told you so.”
This is tragic, we are now saying to count on sin to carry us through hard times, Why did everyone forget to count on God.
Finally Ohio came through.
When crime, poverty and other blights on already blighted cities here in Ohio rise when the casino’s are finally built and about 5,000 more people are making slightly over minimum wage (people will be asking why). Remember that you voted for it and you are going to get it. Retards!!!
Very disapointed in the state of Ohio
The FoP endorsed issue 3 — they certainly now have job security with the added crime that will increase in Ohio.
where are the results you Jackass…….
These people against the casinos calling people retards shows their level of intelligence. I guess they are ok with pouring millions into our neighboring states pockets. If you don’t like the casinos, don’t go. I apologize for Dev to all of the people with mentally challenged children.
For a state that has lost so many jobs its refreshing to see there will be hope for a lot of unemplyed . To all peopl concerned about the evils of gammbling .,lease note:criminals and gamblers are not created by casinos they are there to begin with. About Ohio did the right thing.
I feel sorry for the ignorant people of the cities who think this is going to solve all their economic problems. They have just opened up more problems than had.
It’s a shame God doesn’t come first in their lives.
Rights to the people! if you wanna gamble, now you have that FREE CHOICE in our fine state. Next i will be voting on 21 to hit at the roulette table.
This is the best decision Ohio has made in a long time. Now we just need to get onboard with some other legalizations!
LET PEOPLE MAKE THEIR OWN DECISIONS! Isn’t that why we’re in america anyway?
WOOHOO!!! I’M GONNA GET A JOB!!!!!!!!!!!
Kem, you are exactly right. This will do nothing more than add to sin and crime. A very sad day for Ohio with far sadder ones to follow.
The problem with gambling is within the individuals that abuse it, just like every other vice. Every educated religious zealot will tell you that sin lies within us, and our ability to deal with temptation, not because there are a couple of new buildings in Ohio. We shouldn’t ban automobiles because there are speeders, we shouldn’t outlaw cheeseburgers and apple pie because of the obesity in this state. In this country and in this state we should have the freedom to chose for ourselves what we want to do with our nickles. I know several people that would love to be making “just over minimum wage” despite your perceived state of their mental retardation.
Good! Way to go OHIO! Keep OUR MONEY in OUR BACKYARD! we live in one of the highest taxed states, bout time something is going to bring money into OHIO! So what if its a vice! IT IS JOBS! I guess you want to outlaw bars and smokes too!
People need to stop pointing fingers at a business opportunity for our state as a excuse for ripping families apart. Take responsibility for yourselves people!!!!! Instead of blaming everything else own up to your own problems!!! If you can’t handle it stay out of the casino!!
The Cleveland Police are already over-burdened. When the casinos come into town it’s going to get exponentially worse. For those of you out there who voted for this – here is a personal message from me . . . Maybe next time you should do a little research before you vote. Yes – that means not just listening to the media and clinging to one idea or another, it means actually doing a little PERSONAL RESEARCH. Yes, on paper the casinos create jobs – but what do you think is going to happen to the smaller business in the area? When the casino comes in, and builds fancy restaurants, bars, etc – do you really think visitors are going to go outside of a few block radius to visit the local establishment?? Probably not. When visitors come to these establishments, it’s to gamble and party – which equates to more bars, strip clubs, drugs – you name it. And then are we going to pay more taxes to hire more police? When you have a domestic call at 3 in the morning outside of the city, do you really think they will come running – when they can’t as it is? Stupid call people – you will regret this ‘uninformed, unresearched’ decision.
This is sad. I go play slots once in a while. Ten years ago I could play and enjoy it and win sometimes. Now the casinos have set all the slots so tight that you can’t even get a replay. $300 gone in 30 minutes. The point is, with more casinos coming in, you won’t have a chance for even a modest win of $300.
WOW. Very disappointed in Ohio. When these casinos are built by out of state contractors, run by out of state personel, leaving a few janatorial jobs for the rubes of Ohio, I will be here to say “I told you so.” If you can’t afford a cheap flight to Vegas, you probably shouldn’t be gambling. Why make this more accesible to to low income people and elderly, who will certainly be frequenting the slot rooms? Make no mistake, casinos in cities like Toledo will not have the glitz and glamore of Vegas. Instead, they will be more like Detroit, full of people in sweatpants spending their weekly minimun wage paycheck. Have fun. FYI, Detroit has three casinos. How do you think that’s going? When is the last time you wanted to visit Detroit?
All this talk about crime and sin, these are things that are built into you, people will not sin if they don’t already have sin in their heart.
Wow really people… Rely on god?? what does he have to do with this. For those people who say it ruined their lives… suck it up just don’t go to the casino. If you have that bad of a gambling problem… you really should see someone. Why cant you idiots just look at how much money this is going to bring into the state????? Honestly, how much crime and drugs and other problems do you hear coming from the boat in indy????? so all you whiners can just shut up!!!
I think its a good thing, going to bring money to the state and with that more jobs are created. People will want to come to OHIO instead of going to that other place up north, what is that place called? Any way more money more jobs for everybody.
Its about time
Laura if dumping your money into slots is breaking your family maybe you guys should stop going?
The one thing that people cannot deny is that this issue will create many jobs at a time when unemployment is up.
Also people who wish to gamble will find a way somehow (i.e. river boats) this money Ohioans are spending is leaving Ohio, at least with casinos in Ohio the money and taxes will be going to Ohio.
Proud to say I voted yes on Issue 3, also Dev I’m not retarded.
Pathetic, DUMB! Create jobs in other ways, higher level education and higher quality jobs are the answers. …politicians are benefiting here.
What’s next, legalizing prostitution?IDIOTS!
Issue 3 passing in Ohio is a great thing for one primary reason; freedom. Whether or not it increases crime or tax revenue is a lot less important than the fact that Ohioans will have the freedom to “choose” an Ohio gambling option. The whole concept behind America’s constitution was to protect its citizens’ inherent rights (commerce, religion, speech, etc.). Personally, I’m not thrilled about the fact that this ballot legalizes 4 monopolies, but I am excited about new jobs and increased revenues for cities/schools/police/new gambling commission. While this is only my personal feeling, I do think this is a step in the right direction.
Seriously? You cant wait to say I told you so? You shouldn’t live in Ohio, represent your state, support your fellow citizens, and support whether you believe or not, it is your obligation to support it and give it a chance. Get over your nickel slots, thats a joke
I’m so glad that the casino gambling bill was approved. I think the next step is to start working on legalising prostitution and and drugs like meth and cocaine. We could put a lot of money back into the economy that way. Come on Ohio think about your neighbors wallet. There’s money in there that he doesn’t need.
Laura,
Casinos have not torn your family apart if someone has a gambling problem within your family that’s a sickness on there behalf, like smoking, drugs, or alcohol or any other addiction or crutch, simply they need help.
Your analogy leads me to believe its the casinos fault or the ability to gamble in general causing the problem where in reality its the person or persons on Inability to discipline themselves…
Kem,
Gambling is sin? Don’t instill your beliefs upon me, you don’t want to go to a casino, Don’t go, Just like a dirty Bookstore or porn You don’t like it, then don’t participate, Personally I don’t myself, But I also believe I should not Instill my will on others…
The remark casino means people don’t believe or trust in God has no ties or rational thinking!!!
Anne,
Yes Ohio Politicians and residents finally caved in, Is it all about the money?
Dev,
So Casinos bring Crime and other Illegal activity, what supports that theory other than what you have heard and information you follow like the sheep you are.
As for minimum wage Jobs, maybe maybe-not, some will be others will not. But is anyone forced to work there? they could educate themselves, start a business, do or be anything they want to be, If they want to…
The only Retard may be yourself bringing the mindset that its a bad idea to bring casinos because all it will be is Minimum wage Jobs, this will likely be a good portion yes, but also will create and impact many others as well making well above minimum wage. Such as the trades that will be employed to build the casinos, business impacted around them, people to run the casinos, the list Goes on.
Remember you are what you are because that’s all you want to be… Noone is holding you back other than yourself!!!
Dan in Richfield
Also Kem the Bible does not specifically condemn gambling, betting, or the lottery. It does warn us to stay away from the love of money and get rich quick skeams. And in moderation gambling is no more evil than some of the other frivilous things people spend their money on.
bad. bad. bad. ohio will gamble more. ohio will lose more. some casino owner wins. we lose.
“Kem November 4, 2009 at 4:35 pm
This is tragic, we are now saying to count on sin to carry us through hard times, Why did everyone forget to count on God.”
Hey Kem,
People like you, who would be against the choice that is obviously, the best direction for the state to go, in the name of your religion, confound me. So you really think that all the jobs and revenue that this is going to generate are a sin? There is a simple solution that people like you don’t seem to be capable of grasping. If you don’t like the casino do go to it, likewise, if you don’t like something on T.V. don’t watch it, if you don’t like same gender relationship’s, don’t date someone of your same gender and you wont have to worry about it.
So you and Jesus can kick it at your house and keep each other company, I’m going to shoot some dice at our new casino!!!
Sad day for the Buckeye State, I grew up in Ohio and have such wonderful memories. Hard working people with great family values. They say that as Ohio goes so goes the nation well gambling and illegal activity never lead to good things.
This is one of the best things that could have happened to the state of Ohio. Because of this passing, the economy will begin to grow as soon as the casino’s open. Thank you to everyone who voted for this change.
The moral objection is laughable. These are the same people who sell coffee every Tuesday and Thursday…you know at their churches bingo nights. “Hey Father maybe we should move the Vegas tent at our churches carnival to the front so everyone can see it”…Your version of god is watching you too but his arms are too tired to turn over the table like he did in that work of fiction you use as a crutch.
Wow lets see what jobs are available at a Casino? Maid, Waiter, table dealer, janiter, reception clerk. Wow so many great paying jobs coming to OHIO. Just to let people know 90 percent of Hotels and Casinos fill there jobs with illegals and foreigners. Way to go!!!!!!you guys rock lets change the state constitution to allow a monopoly on the casinos by 1 very wealthy buisness man. Then tax him below what other people get taxed. I love how the Unions were against it in 08 during obamas election but this year there for it, CAN YOU SAY PAY OFF
I’m very disappointed in the the passing of issue 3. There are a lot better ways of creating jobs than building casinos. I very much have a problem with this from a moral standpoint. The state of Ohio sold out to crime an corruption. Besides the moral issue, those of you that think they’re going to get a job a and money will stay on Ohio and so forth are quite naive. The only ones going to make out are the out-of-state owners and promoters. This deal will not “make money” folks. Money spent on normal goods and services will now be diverted to out-of-state casino owners. Yea, there will be some tax revenue but that will be squandered by the state. This only looked good on paper.
Thank you to the Voters in Ohio that had the presence of mind to say YES! And to all the religious do gooders that are saying there will not be anything other than minimum wage jobs available let me ask you this. Is there shame in accepting a minimum wage job if it allows you to provide food for your family?
Dave “It’s a shame God doesn’t come first in their lives.”
Do you know that not everyone is not Religious? How does God being a priority in their lives have anything to do with this Issue. It’s alright though, go back to your narrow minded beliefs and ideals.
I am really surprised that why people are so short-sighted. Just think that what majority of people did to get some jobs and some revenues in Ohio. Brought all the evils!!!! What will casinos produce? I think that it will produce more greed so will produce more crimes and addictions!!! Draining all extra revenues in stopping added crime and spending the money to rehabilitate to addicted gamblers and drug addicted either. And Ya! many existing small businesses will be definitely going away and millions of the dollars of the personal savings will be going under the casino slot machines for the sure leading them to brake their families? I did not get any idea that where is economic sense here to pass issue 3.
What a stupid idea. Do you really think that Ohio is going to have an economic resurgence due to CASINOS? It’s just changing money around, not producing anything of value. I can’t believe anyone thinks that sucking out every last penny from retirees and underemployed will somehow lead us into a Golden Age. When our state goes the way of Detroit you’ll deserve it.
Laura,
Hate to tell you this, but if your family was torn apart by nickel slots then I don’t think gambling was the problem. Self control seems to be the issue. Take away the gambling, and chances are another vice would take its place. These people need help from loved ones, not excuses.
Dev,
It may be true that some or even most of the jobs in casinos may be minimum wage. But these are also service jobs that make tips. I have spoken to many card dealers that say their base pay is not very good, but with tips they can make a very good wage. Nobody seems to be too upset that servers at restraunts make less then minimum wage.
Anyone that thinks casinos promote crime obviously has never been to one. You can’t turn around without bumping into security. Often times the areas around the casino are some of the cleanist, most newly developed, and nicest in the city.
Lastly, God and church are a big part of my life. Unfortunatly, I’ve never been able to attend one of my churches bingo nights or casnio night fund rasiers.
I’m in favor of legalizing gambling but I’m not in favor of casinos owned by the same people who own them in PA. More corporate control is the last thing this country needs anywhere. If they let anyone get a casino operator’s license I would be completely in favor. Let’s hope there’s room for change on this issue.
If casinos bring money to ohio, than where is the money coming from… from ohio…
It’s funny, the section of Detroit where the main casinos are located was (pre-casino) the armpit of the world. I would have been terrified to walk those streets at night. Not so much now (post-casino). The casinos have really cleaned up a section of one of the worlds most horrific cities. Crime? Let me tell you, I could get drugs, prostitutes or engage in any criminal activity today without casinos, in any Ohio city. It will be no different with casinos. Toledo and Cleveland are in desperate need for something to revitalize them. Obviously the Tribe and Browns won’t get it done, and LBJ (unfortunately) will probably be playing in NYC soon – so…Blackjack anyone?
In my opinion, it is a great thing that this measure passed. Ohio, and Cleveland in particular, need something that makes us unique and help to draw more people to the city. The casino in Cleveland will do that. It is up to us how we let it affect our city. We can all choose to make good choices, gamble within our means (and don’t if we have none), eat properly and enjoy the “bad stuff” occasionally, drink occasionally and responsibly, if we so choose, and represent our family, city, state and country in a respectable manner. These are OUR individual choices to make, and we alone should be held accountable for and, if applicable reap the benefits of, decisions that we make. I have made mistakes in my life and I do not blame anyone but me for those.
“Slightly above minimum wage” jobs is better than welfare (that is all of our money, paid to people for nothing). Minimum wage jobs with advancement opportunity lead to confidence, a better life and dreams. That is what made this country successful, dreams, goals and HARD WORK. The “janitor” comment is insulting. What is wrong with having a respectable job as a janitor? Is it better or worse than being on welfare and teaching your family that it isnt worth it to work hard? Is it respectable and good to chose to do nothing with your life because you dont want to start out as the lowest man on the totem pole? How can you not be teaching every young person that you come into contact with that nothing compares to the distinct pleasure and satisfaction of having improved your own life and your childern’s?????
I cleaned office buildings and dirty bathrooms to save money for college from the time I was 12 years old. Was it glamorous? Of course not, but today, I still have my children do the same thing, even though they don’t have to. There is no shame in working hard.
There is, however, shame in name calling and ingorant commentary that makes unsupported claims about how everyone’s life will be runied because of casinos. We all make choices in life: I have chosen to work hard and show that example to our children. I have chosen to live within my means and I have chosen to take responsibility for my own choices.
I could have sat around and done nothing my whole life and expected that someone owed me a living, but, my parents taught me better than that. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH A MINIMUM WAGE JOB, IT IS A START. I can anticipate the arguments – I KNOW THAT IT IS DIFFICULT TO MAKE ENDS MEET ON THAT WAGE, BUT NOT TAKING A JOB, AND INSTEAD BEING ON UNEMPLOYMENT OR WELFARE BECAUSE IT “ISN’T WORTH IT” TO WORK, IS A DISGRACE TO YOUR FAMILY AND THE GREAT PEOPLE WHO HAVE (AND CONTINUE TO) SACRIFICE THEIR LIVES FOR CITIZENS OF THE UNITED STATES. If you work hard, you will improve your life and your kids and their kids and so on. It may not happen fast, but for our parents, it didn’t either, it took GENERATIONS! Work three jobs if you have to – just like my Mom did, and stress the importance of family, surround yourself with hardworking people like yourself who CARE about their future and are trying to do something about it. Help a neighbor, help a single mom or dad with their kids for a few hours a day so that they can get a job, get training, get some exercise. Do something, don’t just keep blaming everyone else.
Further, as a practicing Catholic (but not a perfect person by any means), I feel completely appalled by the use of the religous references as though God is only on the side of those who voted against Issue 3. If you paid attention in Sunday School, or ever read the bible, God doesn’t take sides on such issues, he wants us to be good people, to help others and, by the way, it seems entirely funny to me that people claiming or acting like they are perfect in God’s eyes have forgotten one of the most significant things (in my opinion) that God said “Judge Not, Lest YOU be judged”. I am the keeper of my faith, sins and relationship with God. If you even believe in God (or not), you should understand that thse tings are none of your business.
Cleveland (and the other cities in Ohio) – our citizens have exercised their democratic right and have approved the measure. Even if you did not vote for it, we need to all get behind improving our city(ies). If casinos are not the answer in your mind, and EDUCATION is, start volunteering on a weekly basis to tutor kids in our city schools; volunteer to read and their story times, donate books to the library (if you shop around it will only cost you about a cup of fancy coffee per book), open or volunteer for a gambling addiction hotline, help in whatever way you believe will make our city better. If we all stop complaining and criticizing, and put our hearts into our cities, we can have a well balanced and successful future and a city that our children and grandchildren will be proud to call home. Hurtful and judgemental conclusions are not helpful, it takes action to make things happen. Start making some action of your own!
It bout time that the people came through on the casino issue. It will provide jobs for alot of people ,and bring in money to the state to help off set money finances problems. The gambling issue is personal & moral thing with each person. Now we will be able to keep the money in the state.
You do not need statistics to understand that Casinos attract the dregs of society. All you need is a little common sense. I lived in St. Louis for 2 years and saw what it does to the local community. I wonder if folks would think differently if we were building the casino in their back yard.
Jonathan in Columbus
FUUUUUCCCCKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!
This may create a few temporary jobs, but it’s hardly going to be this great boon to Ohio in the long run. Tax schemes on gambling are just that… schemes. They aren’t committed to actually building up a gambling industrial base. If they were, they’d open up the whole state. Vegas is successful only because they accept casinos as an industry instead of as a taxing scheme. Revenues from this type of business will only generate a stable tax income if you allow it to grow and stand on its own. I don’t have a moral aversion to gambling, as such would be having a moral aversion to people deciding on their own values and responsibility. I simply think this is a joke of a plan IF the intent is to actually bring money into the state. As far as the misnomer that a bunch of money is leaving Ohio to gambling, you have to have a solid industrial base to generate income before it can leave the state. If you want to create jobs, create jobs. This is nothing more than a government scam.
